A Storied Past: From Vernon Stouffer to Marriott

Stouffer Hotels traces its roots to the 1920s, when Vernon Stouffer expanded his family’s restaurant in Cleveland, Ohio, into a nationally recognized brand known for refined service and culinary excellence. At its peak from the 1960s to 1980s, Stouffer Hotels ranked alongside Hilton and Sheraton as one of America’s premier luxury hotel chains.

In 1973, the brand was acquired by Nestlé, the world’s largest food and beverage company. Nestlé sought to align its food service expertise with hospitality but eventually exited the hotel business in the early 1990s as it refocused its global strategy.

Stouffer Hotels was then acquired by New World Development, the Hong Kong-based conglomerate behind Rosewood Hotels & Resorts. The brand was relaunched as Stouffer Renaissance Hotels, a co-branding initiative blending its classic legacy with the contemporary appeal of Renaissance.

In 1997, Marriott International acquired the Renaissance portfolio, including Stouffer Renaissance, and subsequently phased out the Stouffer name.

Rediscovering the Soul of Service

Stouffer wasn’t just known for its properties, but it was revered for its internal culture. Its signature training program, The Spirit of Hospitality, set a new benchmark for service in the industry, grounded in compassion, attentiveness, and professionalism.

At the heart of its philosophy is the enduring tagline, “Everybody is Somebody.” This belief in treating every guest and team member with equal respect distinguished Stouffer as a brand rooted in humanity and sincere hospitality.

The Future Begins in Asia

This marks the start of a multi-country expansion across Southeast Asia, with a target of 15 hotels within the next five years.

Erick Herlangga’s appointment is more than a leadership assignment, it is a bold statement that Stouffer is not merely returning but reimagining its legacy for a new era.

Through a thoughtful balance of heritage, innovation, and heartfelt service, Stouffer is ready to lead the future of hospitality, where every guest, truly, is somebody.
