THAIFEX-World of Food Asia returns for its 15th edition Hosting the largest contingent of global buyers at an F&B tradeshow in the region

Organizers of the 15th edition of THAIFEX-World of Food Asia – Koelnmesse Pte Ltd, the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), and the Thai Chamber of Commerce (TCC) – today announced the trade show’s return from 29 May to 02 June 2018 at an official press conference. New programs targeted to further boost business conversations and transactions are unveiled.

Boosting business opportunities The gateway to ASEAN’s food and beverage (F&B) industry, THAIFEX-World of Food Asia is strategically positioned to penetrate the region that is expected to grow 5.1 per cent in 20181 and projected to rank as the fourth largest economy by 20502.

To devote more time and open up opportunities for business, five days will be dedicated for trade visitors, up from three in 2017, to host an expected 60,000 trade visitors from all over the world. This is a 10 per cent increase from the number of visitors last year.

An expanded and improved hosted buyer program will also facilitate trade and commerce for over 3,000 buyers. This is the largest contingent of buyers hosted at an F&B trade show – a feat made possible only by the unique synergistic partnership between the private and public sector organizers of the show. Key hosted buyers include Capital Retail Limited (Myanmar), Indoguna (Cambodia), Kaimay Trading (Singapore), PANDURASA KHARISMA (Indonesia), PHDeli (Philippines), and Premium Distribution (Myanmar).

“THAIFEX-World of Food Asia is the show that the F&B industry must be at if they are looking for trade opportunities in the ASEAN and Indochina regions. The inclusion of new elements over the years are indicative of the fast-changing environment, and it is crucial that we continue to strengthen our offerings to deliver the best experience for business networking,” said Mathias Kuepper, Managing Director at Koelnmesse Pte Ltd, organizer of THAIFEX-World of Food Asia 2018.

“It is three months prior to the event, and we are already recording very positive
registration figures as well as sign-ups for the hosted buyer program. Numbers speak for themselves, and these are a testament to the event’s ability to provide a highly valuable platform for visitors and exhibitors to congregate. ”

Chantira Jimreivat Vivatrat, Director-General, Department of International Trade Promotion, also commented on how THAIFEX-World of Food Asia opens up the global market to the country’s players in the industry.

“Thailand is the largest food exporter in Southeast Asia, with the country’s food exports forecast to reach US$27.4b this year, according to Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak. We are always striving to boost the potential of Thai players so that they become competent and competitive to help them sustainably and efficiently operate in global markets, and THAIFEX-World of Food Asia is the optimal platform for this.”

“Indeed, THAIFEX-World of Food Asia boosts the competitiveness of Thailand by bringing global and local players onto a single platform and showcase their world-class products and services in F&B”, said Kalin Sarasin, Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade of

1 According to a FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast
2 According to forecast by IHS Thailand, and Chairman of the Tourism Authority of Thailand Board of Directors.

“This trade show helps place Thai F&B entrepreneurs and small medium enterprises on the world map of quality, expertise, and innovation, reinforcing Thailand’s position as ‘Kitchen of the World’.”

A robust marketplace that delivers competitive edge Playing host to more than 2,500 exhibitors from 40 countries and regions, THAIFEX-World of Food Asia 2018 will house its largest congregation of international and local exhibitors in a space that is 14 per cent bigger than last year. It will showcase 11 masterfully crafted trade shows across all 11 mega halls - an increase from 9 halls previously - at the IMPACT Exhibition and Convention Center. Visitors can expect an unparalleled exhibition across Fine Food, Meat, Food Service, Food Technology, Coffee & Tea, Drinks, Sweets & Confectionery, Frozen Food, Seafood, Rice, and Fruits & Vegetables.

“THAIFEX-World of Food Asia has been a mainstay in our business calendars since its inception, because of the vital role it plays in growing and supporting our growth in the region,” said Vittavat Tantivess, Executive Vice President, Marketing, Charoen Pokphand Foods PCL. “We’re excited to be part of the refreshed edition, and believe that it will fully support our objectives to meet valuable buyers and cement our footprint in the the industry.”

This year’s event also welcomes Argentina as the official partner country, and more than 40 country and provincial pavilions, including new exhibitor groups from Belgium and Sicily, Italy.

“Argentina is honored to be the partner country for THAIFEX-World of Food Asia 2018. This is an important food trade show for us to penetrate the Southeast Asia market, one of the most dynamic trading regions globally. As a leading food producer and exporter, we look forward to contributing with our innovative and high quality solutions that adhere to the most stringent sanitary and environmental standards to Asian consumers.

We are excited to be participating in the trade show for the first time, and look forward to strengthening and generating new commercial bonds,” said Ch. E. Juan José Ciácera, General Secretary of the Federal Council of Investments (CFI).

Knowledge and information exchange takes centerstage
Continuing the positive partnership, Innova Market Insights returns as the official knowledge partner to THAIFEX-World of Food Asia. Making a debut this year is the ‘THAIFEXtaste Innovation Show’, where in-depth analysis on the opportunities and challenges driving the F&B landscape will be showcased alongside top consumer trends around packaging, technology and flavours that are taking product development forwardin 2018.

Following the successful launch of the Top 50 Innovative Products last year, the segment will also return for exhibitors to submit entries on their innovative products or technologies. These submissions will be reviewed by a panel of media partners, Innova Market Insights, and the organizing committee. Innovative products crowned last year included gluten-free beer, quinoa nuggets, and rice oil spray.

Soulbytes Soul-Nourishing Café, Coffee Roaster And Bakery Reflects The Philosophy Of Owner Ilario Colli

SoulBytes is a wholly unique, holistic, soul-nourishing coffee roaster and bakery located in the heart of Seminyak, Bali, specialising in excellent coffee and delicious, contemporary Australian café-style food. Alongside innovative and original dishes made with the freshest, locally sourced produce and their own specialty-grade coffee blend roasted in-house, SoulBytes serves reminders to connect with others and to lead rich and meaningful lives, nourishing not only the stomach but also the soul.

The driving engine behind SoulBytes’ philosophical and humanitarian goals is owner Ilario Colli. He was inspired by the work of Alain de Botton when considering the premise for SoulBytes; Religion for Atheist, in which de Botton discusses the ideal restaurant: “The modern restaurant should be a refuge from coldness and anonymity, a place where customers leave better people than they were when they arrived.” This passage had a decisive influence on Colli’s determination to explore this concept in café form.

A native of Perth, Western Australia, Colli describes himself as ‘a man of letters’ with his interests based in the arts, humanities, literature, philosophy and music. Fluent in English and Italian with a good knowledge of French, German and Spanish, Colli was a brilliant student, studying at University in Perth, Bologna, Stuttgart and Vienna. As a former composer and classical musician, his love of music saw him launch a career as a music journalist, engaged by Limelight magazine, Australia’s foremost classical music publication. His passion for writing led him to begin a novel based around classical music, and whilst researching, to immerse himself in the works of the great philosophers such as Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Dostoevsky, Musil, Sartre, Heidegger and Camus.

“In many ways, SoulBytes is an attempt to bring many of the major thought motifs of existentialist philosophy to a wider audience, in the hope that they might be able to help others live more happily and wisely,” said owner Ilario Colli. “In this sense, it can be said that has a very strong , humanistic and even existentialist underpinning. It is, in other words, animated by the idea that in this life, we alone are responsible for creating our own meaning and happiness. SoulBytes was always about more than just serving great food and coffee but also very much about nourishing the soul.”
Colli fell in love with Bali during his first stint on the island in 2014 before moving to Koh Samui to work on his novel Sidonia. He recognized that Bali had become an epicenter of great food and beverages, second to none in terms of sophistication in South East Asia, so in 2016, he returned to Bali, knowing it was time to realize his dream of opening SoulBytes.

SoulBytes’ philosophical and humanitarian goal is achieved in various ways. In a pledge to be more than just a café, to nourish the soul as well as satisfy the taste buds, SoulBytes has filled its beautiful café space with soulful, often interactive reminders to connect with others, show kindness, and lead rich, examined lives, in a hustle-bustle world, dominated by technology, where such vital human imperatives are often overlooked.

There’s a “hug spot” on the floor, where, if two people are standing on it, they hug. A copper bust of Socrates, the father of modern philosophy, greets the customer as they walk in, and they can choose to rub his bald head to gain a touch of his wisdom.

With every coffee is served an inspiring quote by one of history’s great writers, to inspire customers to re-evaluate their choices and live richly and meaningfully. Along with food, “SoulCards” are served; cards with thought-provoking questions, such as “Have you achieved your purpose in life?” and “How could you describe your essence with one word?” to prompt customers to examine their choices in their lives in order to live better and more meaningfully and encourage them to connect each other through more intimate and soul nourishing conversations. Through SoulBytes’ coffee charity scheme, a percentage of every standard coffee sold is donated to charity, so their customers are given the opportunity to contribute to others’ happiness and spread kindness.

SoulBytes’ extraordinary and unique interior is designed by Caroline Usher of Ushers by Design, the same genius responsible for the design of Mamasan, Salazon, and Shanghai Baby.

Central to the design of SoulBytes is a spectacular art installation by Australian artist Jack Bromell, running along one wall of the space. It represents a two-month collaboration between the artist and owner Ilario Colli, with concepts and ideas from Colli’s favourite philosophers, executed in a surreal, dreamlike and emotionally charged style. SoulBytes’ central bar is more of a functionally perfect piece of art, with long solid wooden curves that sweep around to provide the anchor for the tall, refinished steel frame, extending to the ceiling.

The frame itself comes alive as a beautiful maelstrom of shadows and angles with the addition of the fantail-bird lighting enclosed within, reminiscent of an Escher painting floating in the centre of the space. There are a variety of tones and textures in each different zone within the space, with a rich colour palette of reds, blues and yellows, accented by strikingly graphic elements such as the mural and the herringbone design of the floors.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, SoulBytes’ food philosophy is to serve original and creative recipes, tantalising both to the eyes and to the taste buds, made with the freshest and highest-quality ingredients and, above all, with passion, compassion and love. Guests enjoy dishes that are a synthesis of the existing and the new, taking contemporary Australian café cuisine and adding unique touches to create delicious and highly innovative culinary novelties. The SoulBytes in-house bakery produces baked delicacies not only for the café, but also for wholesale to businesses throughout Bali and Gili Lombok.

“At SoulBytes, we are committed to cooking with the healthiest recipes and ingredients, preparing meals that satisfy appetites and nourish guests physically and mentally,” said Colli. “The SoulBytes team believe in minimizing the negative impact our species makes on the environment and our fellow living creatures, so all our products are prepared in full respect of ecologically sound principles.”

Coffee is a fundamental and defining part of the SoulBytes experience, where good coffee making is an art, and the barista’s work is like that of a skilled artist. The baristas are highly trained and competent, well versed in coffee-related matters and bursting with a passion for their craft.

SoulBytes has their own house blend, roasted on-premises in an especially installed roasting lab replete with a state-of-the-art Probat roaster; an inimitable blend using 3 – 4 single origins, each contributing to the overall flavour and unique character. In support of the region’s excellent coffee bean industry, the blends use various Indonesian beans, including those from Flores, Java and Sumatra. Among the highlights of the coffee menu is a selection of unique and creative signature coffee drinks. SoulBytes’ unique blend is also distributed wholesale to businesses in Indonesia.

“SoulBytes is a place where people come to step away from their busy lives for a while,” said Colli. “I love that customers leave not only having enjoyed a beautiful meal or coffee, but having found replenishment for the soul as well.”

In our midst were international brands such as Accor, Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise, Bangkok Airways, BHM Asia, Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group, Clyde & Co Clasis Singapore, Colliers, D3 Capital, Dusit, Hard Rock International, Horwath HTL, Movenpick Hotels & Resorts, Pan Pacific Hotel Group, Savills, STR, UbiQ Global Solutions, WATG as well as leading local brands like Aureum Group, Business Alliance Hotel, FMI Air, Golden Brown Coffee Co. Hospitality Investment Conference Vietnam 2017

Uncovering the hospitality investment opportunity in Vietnam

Thank you for being a part of the inaugural Hospitality Investment Conference Vietnam 2016.

The two-day conference brought together close to 140 decision makers from 11 different countries with the same goal of understanding what opportunities in the hospitality sector the Vietnamese market has to offer. We had the honour of having Dr. Ha Van Sieu, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) deliver the opening keynote address on Conference Day 1.

In 2015, Viet Nam welcomed nearly 8 million international tourist arrivals and served 57 million domestic tourists. Total revenues reached 15.4 billion USD, contributing 6.6% to the GDP. Garnering particular mention is the development of the hotel sector which achieved significant results with the total number of accommodation reaching over 19,400 establishments, comprising 390,000 rooms.

As of May 2016, the country has 101 5-star hotels, 229 4-star hotels and 463 3-star hotels. Notably, in the period 2010-2015, the number of 3- to 5-star hotels rose faster than the overall average (+16% for 5-star hotels, 14% for 4-star hotels and 13 % for 3-star hotels). The development of the hotel sector has contributed to improving Vietnam's tourism image, towards one of modernity and high quality.

Grant Thornton (Vietnam) opened Conference Day 1 with the key findings from its hot-off-the-press Vietnam Hotel Survey 2016, sharing that there was an 11.3% decrease in average Room rates, while the average occupancy rose 1.2%. RevPAR decreased by 15.1% for the 4-star hotels on the one hand, whilst increasing 4.3% for the 5-star hotels on the other. STR also presented an optimistic outlook for development in Vietnam, anticipating growth in both RevPAR and supply.

The rest of Day 1 featured engaging presentations by the likes of VinaCapital and Christina’s, as well as focused panels on investment; branding & designing; HMA negotiation and owner-managed vs. the chains for hotel operation.

Conference Day 2 highlighted what’s new in Vietnam, going forward. The spotlight was cast on economy hotels; Vietnam’s burgeoning gaming sector; destinations; as well as up-and-coming golf courses and hospitality complexes in the country.

Recurring mentions throughout the course of the 2 days are 1) Phu Quoc as an emerging destination, outside of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi and 2) the pervasiveness of the millennial traveller and how the industry as a whole, is evolving alongside this generation of guests.

Organisations present at the event included Alcatel-Lucent, Asian Coast Development Ltd., Baker & McKenzie (Vietnam), BHMAsia & Louvre Hotels Group, DN Legal, dwp, Dynasty Investments, EXO Travel Vietnam, FLC, Gaw Capital, Global G5 Trading & Investment, Hilton Worldwide, Ho Tram Project Company, Hoi An Pearl JSC, Hoi An South Development Co., Horwath HTL, IMG Golf Course Management, IHG, Jones Lang LaSalle, Laguna Lang Co, Neptune Invest, Plateno Group, QUO, SC Capital, Stellar Management Corp, TBS Group, Tung Shing Group, Vinpearl Hotel Management, Wyndham Hotel Group, YWS Design and many more.
